SPECIAL MEETING
July 15, 1963
A Special Meeting of City Council was held Monday, July 15, 1963 at 8:30 P.M. with Mayor Carroll presiding. Councilmen present were Messrs. Biggs, Hayes, Hill, Holpp, Hughes, Smith and Walls.
The meeting was called for the purpose of hearing a report from a group of local citizens who are participating in the People to People program and who recently visited the sister City of Dover, Lamia, Greece.
Approximately 60 interested citizens were present. Mayor Carroll welcomed all and expressed his appreciation to the Dover-Lamia group, with particular thanks going to Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Brittan, who sparked the local program, and represented the Mayor and his wife, who were unable to make the trip to Greece. He recognized Col. Oren Poage, representing the Dover Air Force Base, which greatly assisted the local group.
Mr. Brittan responded, and introduced all those present who traveled to Greece and participated in the program, among whom were, Mrs. Brittan, Mrs. Richard C. Beckett, Mrs. William Bradford, Mrs. Andy B. Clements, Mrs. J. Norman Cubbage, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Dobberstein, Mr. and Mrs. Earle J. Duncan, Mr. and Mrs. George Ehinger, Mrs. Lockwood C. Emmert, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Hallet, Mr. and Mrs. Donald K. Harmeson, Miss Margaret Hartnett, Mr. and Mrs. Edward S. Hodgson, Miss Florence W. Hopkinson, Boston, Mass., Mr. James D. Lucas, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur A. Miller, Dr. and Mrs. Maynard H. Mires, Mrs. F.J. O’Neill Sr., Mrs. Harold J. Rau, Mr. and Mrs. Lester N. Scharnberg. Mr. Brittan spoke of the warm and friendly welcome extended by all the people of Lamia. The warmth of the welcome was a recurring theme throughout the evening. Mr. Miller exhibited slides of pictures taken in and about Lamia. Dr. Mires and Mrs. Beckett spoke of their experiences and observances, as did Mrs. Brittan and others. Mr. Brittan presented to Mayor Carroll a large Greek flag and a painting of Lamia, gifts to Dover from the City, and to the Mayor and his wife, replicas of Lamian coins dating from 450 B.C., a gift from the Mayor of Lamia. Mr. Brittan also presented to Mayor Carroll a medallion sent by the Mayor of Rome who received the group on the trip.
Mayor Carroll thanked the group for their report and invited all to partake of refreshment after the meeting.
Council adjourned at 10:20 P.M.
